What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization, spelled generative engine optimisation in British English, is the practice of shaping your website and online presence so that AI answer engines can retrieve your content and use it in a response. Those engines include Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
The goal is different from classic SEO. SEO tries to earn a click from a results page. GEO tries to earn a mention, a citation or a recommendation inside an answer the user may never leave. Both depend on the same foundation: a crawlable, fast, trustworthy site with useful content.
If you are new to the wider shift, how AI is changing SEO gives the background, and our AI search optimization service covers the hands-on work.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what is the difference?
The three overlap heavily. Treat them as layers, not rivals.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages in search results | Win featured snippets, voice answers and People Also Ask boxes | Be cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers |
| Where it shows | Google, Bing results pages | Snippet boxes, voice assistants, answer panels | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot |
| Core tactics | Technical health, content, links, local signals | Direct answers, question headings, lists, tables, FAQ content | Entity clarity, quotable facts, schema, consistent brand mentions |
| How you measure | Rankings, clicks, impressions, leads | Snippet ownership, impressions for question queries | Spot checks of AI answers, referral traffic, branded search |
| Predictability | Moderate, with long track record | Moderate | Low and changing quickly |

How do AI assistants choose which sources to cite?
The honest answer is that no outside party knows the full recipe. The engines do not publish their ranking logic, and it changes. What can be said with reasonable confidence comes from documentation, public statements and observation.
What is reasonably well established:
- Many AI search features retrieve live web pages first and then write an answer from them, so being crawlable and indexable matters. A page that is blocked or not indexed cannot be retrieved.
- Google has said that AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same quality systems and technical requirements as normal Search, with no special markup required. Check the current Google Search documentation.
- Clear, factual, well-structured passages are easier to extract than long, vague copy.
- Pages that match the question closely, and come from sites with some authority on the topic, appear to be cited more often.
What is unknown or contested: how much schema helps, how much links versus brand mentions count, whether any particular format is favored, and how different assistants weigh freshness. Claims of a secret formula, or a guaranteed citation, should be treated with suspicion.
Content formats that tend to get cited
Because these systems lift passages, write passages worth lifting. This is the same discipline that wins featured snippets, applied across the whole site.
- Answer first. Put a 40 to 60 word direct answer right under a question-style heading, then add depth.
- Definitions. One clear sentence that says what a thing is before you expand on it.
- Tables and lists. Comparisons, steps and checklists are easy to extract and easy for a person to trust.
- Specific facts. Named products, locations, prices, dates and limits beat generic claims. Say where the figure comes from.
- Original material. Your own process, pricing logic, photos, data and examples give an assistant something it cannot get from a hundred competitors.
- Honest limits. Saying what you do not do or cannot promise builds the trust that helps both people and models.
The practical GEO checklist
Most of this is ordinary good SEO with sharper entity work on top.
| Signal | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl and index access | Engines cannot cite what they cannot fetch. | Allow search and AI crawlers you want in robots.txt, keep pages indexable, fix errors. See how to get your website indexed. |
| Entity clarity | The system must know who you are, what you do and where. | Use one consistent business name, address, services and description everywhere. Add an About page and clear service pages. |
| Structured data | Gives machines explicit labels for your content. | Add Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article and BreadcrumbList schema that matches visible content. See the schema guide. |
| Brand mentions | Third-party mentions help models and search systems corroborate you. | Keep Google Business Profile, directories, and relevant industry sites accurate and consistent. |
| Topical depth | Coverage of a subject signals expertise. | Build clusters of connected pages. See topical authority. |
| Freshness and accuracy | Stale facts get skipped or misquoted. | Update prices, hours and services, and show an updated date. |
How do you measure GEO?
There is no Search Console report for 'AI citations' that gives you a complete picture, and tools that claim one rely on sampling. Treat all GEO numbers as directional.
A sensible routine is simple. Pick 15 to 25 questions a real customer would ask, such as 'who builds e-commerce websites in Dubai' or 'best accountant in Austin'. Ask them in several assistants once a month, record whether you are mentioned or cited, and note which competitors appear. Combine that with referral traffic from AI domains in analytics, growth in branded search, and your normal Search Console data.
Expect noise. The same question can return different answers on different days, so look for trends over months, not single results.
GEO for the UAE, the United States and India
The principles are the same everywhere, but the questions differ. UAE buyers often ask in both English and Arabic and add a city, such as Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. US buyers add a state or city and compare providers. Indian buyers search in English, Hindi and regional languages, often on mobile.
Write for those real questions. Create city and service pages that answer them, keep your Google Business Profile accurate, and publish in the languages your customers use. See our pages for the UAE, the United States and Dubai for how this fits into a wider search plan.
Generative engine optimization: common questions
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It means preparing your content and brand so AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews can understand and cite you. It is also written generative engine optimisation in British English.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Most AI search features retrieve pages from the web, so indexable, fast, useful pages remain the base. GEO adds entity clarity, quotable passages and consistent brand signals on top of good SEO.
Can anyone guarantee my business will be cited by ChatGPT?
No. The systems are probabilistic and their source selection is not public. You can improve the odds by being clear, crawlable and factual, but any guarantee is a red flag.
Does schema markup help AI search?
It helps machines understand your pages, and Google uses structured data in Search. Whether it directly influences AI citations is not confirmed, so use it for clarity and keep it accurate and matched to visible content.
Should I block AI crawlers?
It is a business decision. Blocking some crawlers can reduce your chance of being cited, while allowing them means your content may be used in answers. Review the current crawler documentation from each provider and decide deliberately.
How do I check if AI assistants mention my business?
Ask a fixed list of customer-style questions in several assistants each month and record the results. Add AI referral traffic from analytics and branded search trends. Treat the numbers as directional, not exact.
How much does AI search optimization cost?
It is usually part of an SEO plan rather than a separate product. Our SEO plans start from $190 per month in the US, and you get a fixed written quote after a scoping call.
