What is actually changing in search?
Search used to return ten links and let the person choose. Increasingly it also returns a written answer, sometimes with sources listed beside it. Google shows AI Overviews on many queries, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can search the web and summarize what they find.
Three practical shifts follow. First, some questions are answered without a click, so impressions and clicks no longer move together. Second, people ask longer, more conversational questions. Third, being named or cited inside an answer becomes a goal alongside ranking.
None of this makes websites irrelevant. These systems need source pages to read, and they favor sources that are clear, accurate and trusted.
How do AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini use your website?
Each surface works differently, and the details change often. This table describes the general pattern, not a fixed rule.
| Surface | How it answers | What helps your page get used |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Summarizes an answer at the top of some results and links to supporting pages | Pages that already rank well, with direct answers, clear headings and trustworthy content |
| ChatGPT search | Searches the web for current questions and cites sources in the reply | Crawlable pages, clear wording, a recognizable brand and mentions on other reputable sites |
| Perplexity | Answers with numbered citations to the pages it read | Concise, factual passages that can be quoted, plus up-to-date content |
| Gemini | Answers from Google's systems and its index of the web | Standard SEO signals, structured data and consistent business information |
Check each platform's current documentation for crawler controls and policies. They change, and nothing here is a guarantee of being cited.
What are GEO and AEO?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) means structuring content so a search feature or assistant can lift a precise answer from it. Featured snippets, voice answers and AI summaries all reward this. Our AEO guide goes deeper.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the wider practice of making your brand and pages likely to be used when a generative model composes an answer. It overlaps heavily with good SEO but puts extra weight on clarity, evidence, entity consistency and mentions across the web. See the GEO guide.
In the UK and many other markets the same ideas are called answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation. The names differ, but the work is the same: be the clearest, most credible source for a specific question.
What stays the same and what is new?
| Area | Still true | Newly important |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling and indexing | Pages must be reachable, indexable and fast | Allowing the crawlers you want, checked against current platform rules |
| Content | Match the search intent and cover the topic properly | A direct answer first, then depth, so a passage can be quoted on its own |
| Authority | Links and reputation build trust | Brand mentions, consistent facts about the business and real author expertise |
| Structure | Clean headings, titles and internal links | Structured data, FAQs, tables and definitions that machines read easily |
| Measurement | Clicks, rankings and conversions | Impressions without clicks, branded searches and referrals from assistants |
What should a business do now?
You do not need a new strategy. You need a sharper version of good SEO.
Fix the foundations
Make sure pages are indexable, fast and mobile-friendly. Without this nothing else is read. See our technical SEO checklist.
Answer questions directly
Put a short, plain answer under each question heading, then expand. Add real FAQs. Our guide to FAQ schema and featured snippets shows how.
Show real expertise
Name authors, describe actual projects and give specifics that a generic text generator could not know.
Build topical depth
Cover a subject with connected pages rather than one-off posts. Read topical authority.
Keep business facts consistent
Use the same name, address, services and description on your site, Business Profile and directories so systems can match them.
What should you avoid?
Avoid publishing large amounts of unedited machine-written text. It tends to repeat what already exists and adds nothing a source page needs to be quoted for. We look at this in can AI replace human SEO.
Avoid chasing tricks aimed at a single assistant. Platforms change their behavior often, and anyone claiming a guaranteed citation is selling hope. Be wary of promises about rankings or traffic, because nobody outside these companies controls them.
Finally, do not neglect measurement. Watch Google Search Console for impressions and queries, and check what assistants say about your brand now and then. If the answer is wrong or thin, that is a content gap you can fill.
AI and SEO: common questions
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. AI answers rely on web pages that search engines and assistants can read and trust. The work has shifted toward clearer answers, structured content and credibility, but crawling, quality and relevance still decide what gets seen.
What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?
SEO is the umbrella practice of earning visibility in search. AEO focuses on being the direct answer in snippets and voice. GEO focuses on being used or cited by generative AI. They share most of their foundations.
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
There is no switch. Publish clear, accurate, well-structured pages, keep your business details consistent, earn mentions on reputable sites and let the relevant crawlers access your content. Nobody can guarantee a citation.
Will AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?
For some informational searches, people may read the summary and not click. Commercial searches, local intent and queries that need a quote or a booking still send visitors. Track impressions and clicks in Search Console to see your own pattern.
Should I block AI crawlers?
It is a business decision. Blocking can protect content but may reduce how often you are cited. Review each platform's current documentation and decide per crawler, rather than blocking everything by default.
Does structured data help with AI search?
It helps machines understand who you are, what you offer and which questions a page answers. It is not a guaranteed ranking or citation factor, but it removes ambiguity. Our AI SEO service includes it.
Can I use AI to write my website content?
You can use it for outlines, research and drafts, but a person should add real expertise, check every fact and edit the result. Unedited output is often generic. See can AI replace human SEO.
