What does it mean to be indexed on Google?
Indexing is when Google stores a copy of your page in its database so it can be shown in search results. A page that is not indexed cannot rank for anything, however good it is.
Three steps come before a ranking. Google discovers the URL (through a sitemap or a link), crawls it (fetches the page), and then decides whether to index it. Google does not index every page it crawls. It judges whether the page is useful, distinct and technically accessible.
You can check a page in two ways. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google for a rough view, or paste the URL into the URL Inspection tool in Search Console for the exact answer. The second one is the reliable method.
The indexing checklist, step by step
Work through these in order. Most new sites only need the first four.
Verify the site in Search Console
Add your domain as a property in Google Search Console and verify ownership with a DNS record or an HTML tag. Without it you cannot see index status or request anything. This is included with every build, or you can have it done through Google Search Console set-up.
Publish an XML sitemap and submit it
A sitemap lists the URLs you want indexed. Generate it, check it loads at /sitemap.xml, reference it in robots.txt, and submit it under Sitemaps in Search Console. Include only canonical, indexable pages.
Check nothing is blocking Google
Look for a
noindextag, a robots.txtDisallowrule, a password gate, or a staging setting that was never switched off at launch. This is the most common reason a freshly launched site is invisible.Request indexing for your key pages
Paste the home page and your most important service or product pages into URL Inspection and choose Request indexing. It nudges Google to look sooner. It is a request, not a command, and there is a daily limit, so use it for priority pages only.
Link to every page internally
Link new pages from the home page, navigation or related articles. A page with no internal links is an orphan and often stays undiscovered. See what makes a website SEO-friendly.
Earn a few real links and mentions
A Google Business Profile, a directory listing, a social profile or a mention from a relevant site gives Google another route to your pages and a reason to trust them.
Index statuses in Search Console and how to fix them
The Page indexing report groups URLs by status. These are the ones business sites meet most often.
| Status | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Discovered, currently not indexed | Google knows the URL but has not crawled it yet, often on a new or low-authority site. | Improve internal links, keep the sitemap clean, be patient, and request indexing for priority pages. |
Crawled, currently not indexed | Google fetched the page and chose not to keep it. Usually thin, duplicated or low-value content. | Add original detail, answer the question fully, merge near-duplicates, and link to the page from stronger pages. |
Excluded by noindex tag | A robots meta tag or header tells Google to skip the page. | Remove the tag if the page should be indexed, then re-inspect the URL. |
Blocked by robots.txt | A rule stops Google crawling the URL. | Edit robots.txt, then test the URL again in URL Inspection. |
Duplicate, Google chose different canonical | Google treats another URL as the main version. | Check your canonical tags and make sure each page has distinct content. |
Soft 404 | The page looks empty or like an error but returns a normal response. | Add real content, or return a proper 404 or 410 if the page should not exist. |
Page with redirect | The URL forwards somewhere else, so the destination is indexed instead. | Normally fine. Make sure your sitemap lists the final URL, not the redirecting one. |
Server error (5xx) | Google could not load the page. | Check hosting stability and logs. See how website speed affects SEO. |
Status names can change over time. Always read the current explanation in Search Console and in the Google Search documentation.
Why is my page 'Crawled, currently not indexed'?
This status means Google read the page and decided it was not worth storing yet. It is a quality judgement, not a technical fault, so resubmitting the same page rarely helps.
The usual causes are thin content, text that repeats other pages on your site, copied manufacturer descriptions, or a page that no other page links to. A Dubai trading company with 200 product pages that share one paragraph of text is a typical case: Google keeps a few and skips the rest.
Fix the page, not the request. Add information a visitor cannot get elsewhere: specifications, prices, local details, photos, a real answer. Link to it from your home page or a category page. Then request indexing once and wait.
- Give every page a clear purpose and a unique title and heading.
- Merge or remove pages that say the same thing.
- Add internal links from pages that are already indexed.
- Do not publish hundreds of near-empty pages. A smaller site of useful pages indexes better.
How long does it take Google to index a new website?
It varies. Some new pages are indexed within a few days, especially on a site Google already trusts. A brand-new domain with no links can take several weeks, and some pages are never indexed because Google judges them low value. Nobody outside Google can promise a date, and a studio that does is guessing.
These things usually speed it up: a clean sitemap, strong internal links, fast and stable hosting, original content, and a few links from other sites. These things slow it down: duplicate pages, redirect chains, slow servers and blocked resources.
Google, Bing and IndexNow compared
Google is the priority for most businesses, but Bing matters too. It feeds Microsoft Copilot and several other search tools, so a few minutes of set-up is worth it.
| Tool | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Index reports, sitemap submission, URL Inspection, request indexing. | Verify the property, submit the sitemap, inspect priority URLs. |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Same idea for Bing. You can import a verified site from Search Console. | Import your site, then submit the sitemap. |
| IndexNow | An open protocol that tells participating search engines when a URL is added, changed or removed. | Add the key file to your site or use a plugin. Google has not made IndexNow its main route, so keep using Search Console. |
Check each tool's current documentation before relying on it. Support and limits change.
Indexed is not the same as ranking
Getting indexed only puts you in the queue. Whether you appear for a search depends on relevance, content quality, links, speed and competition. If your pages are indexed but invisible, read why your website is not ranking on Google.
Plan indexing into the build instead of fixing it later. A site built with clean structure, a sitemap, schema and Search Console set-up from day one avoids most of the statuses above. That is how our web development projects are set up, and the technical SEO checklist covers the checks in more depth.
If you run a business in the Gulf, remember that Google.ae users often search in English and Arabic. Both language versions need their own indexable URLs and internal links.
Getting indexed on Google: common questions
How can I check if my website is indexed on Google?
Open the URL Inspection tool in Search Console, paste a page address and read the verdict. A quick alternative is searching site:yourdomain.com, but that shows only a rough sample. If the page is not indexed, the report explains why.
How long does Google take to index a new site?
From a few days to several weeks, depending on the domain's age, links, content quality and server speed. Some pages are never indexed. Nobody can guarantee a timeline, so be wary of anyone who does.
Does requesting indexing guarantee my page will be indexed?
No. It asks Google to take a fresh look sooner. The page must still be crawlable and worth keeping. Use it for important pages rather than every URL, because the daily quota is limited.
Do I need a sitemap to be indexed?
Not strictly, since Google can follow links. But a sitemap helps discovery on new sites and large sites, and it gives you a clean list to compare against the index report. Submit one in Search Console.
Why is my page 'Discovered, currently not indexed'?
Google knows the URL but has not crawled it yet. On new sites this often resolves with time, better internal links and a cleaner sitemap. If it persists for many pages, check server speed and content quality.
Should I also submit my site to Bing?
Yes, it takes minutes. You can import a verified property from Search Console into Bing Webmaster Tools. IndexNow can also notify participating engines about new or changed pages.
Can a new website get indexed without backlinks?
Often yes, through a sitemap and Search Console. Links from other sites help discovery and trust, so a Google Business Profile and a few real mentions are worth having.
