Pricing guide

How much does a website cost in the USA?

For a US small business, the price depends far more on who builds the site and what it must do than on the number of pages. Here is how the options compare and where our own prices start.

Your options: agency, freelancer, DIY builder or remote studio

Cost in the US mostly follows who does the work, how many people are involved, and where they are based. This is a qualitative comparison, not a price list.

Website build options for US small businesses
OptionTypical cost levelStrengthsWatch out for
DIY site builderLowest up front, then a monthly planFast to start, you control the contentLimited SEO control, template look, your time is the real cost
Freelance designer or developerLow to midDirect contact, flexible scopeOne person's availability and skills. Ask about SEO, hosting and handover.
Local or national agencyHighestStrategy, account management, larger teamsOverhead is in the price. Small projects can be handed to junior staff.
Remote developer-led studioLow to midThe person scoping the work writes the code, fixed written quotes, SEO built inTime-zone gap, so agree call times and a communication channel up front

Market pricing for other providers varies widely and changes. Ask each for a written quote with the same scope.

How can a remote studio price lower than a US agency?

A studio based in India, like ours in Udupi, carries lower living and office costs than a studio in New York or San Francisco, and it does not need a client-facing sales layer for small jobs. That difference can show up in the price without lowering the standard of the code.

It also comes with trade-offs worth discussing before you sign. Calls happen at agreed times that suit both time zones, support is by email and WhatsApp, and you should ask for the scope, revisions and handover in writing. A good remote studio makes this simple. A poor one hides behind the distance.

What drives the cost of a US small business website?

  • Custom design versus template. A customized template is quicker than a layout designed around your brand.
  • Number and type of pages. Unique pages cost more than repeating templates such as blog posts or product pages.
  • Functionality. Booking, payments, quote forms, memberships and integrations with tools like your CRM or accounting software add development time.
  • Content. Writing, photography and video usually take longer than the build.
  • Local and SEO structure. City and service pages, schema and speed work are cheaper to build in than to retrofit. See what makes a website SEO-friendly.
  • Platform and payments. E-commerce adds a payment provider such as Stripe or PayPal, shipping rules and tax settings.

Extras: hosting, content, sales tax and accessibility

How to compare website quotes properly

  1. Get the scope in writing

Pages, features, number of revision rounds and exclusions should all be listed.

  2. Ask what SEO is included

Page titles, schema, sitemap and speed should be named. We include Google Search Console set-up with every website.

  3. Ask who does the work

Speak to the person who will build the site, and ask about hand-offs between sales, design and development.

  4. Confirm ownership and access

You should own the domain, hosting login and content, with the terms stated in your written quote.

  5. Compare like with like

A monthly-subscription site builder and a custom build are different products. Compare what each does for enquiries, not the headline.

Which option fits your business?

A solo consultant who needs a credible page in a weekend may be well served by a builder. A dental clinic, law office or home-services company that depends on local search needs control over page structure, schema and speed, which usually means a custom build. A store with many products needs an e-commerce platform planned properly from the start.

Whichever route you take, plan for being found. Read about local SEO and SEO for local service businesses, and see how we work with US clients. If you are comparing the UAE or India, our guides to Dubai and India show the same costs in those markets.

Website cost in the USA: common questions

How much does a small business website cost in the US?

It depends on who builds it and the scope. Our starter site begins at $275, a business site at $550 and e-commerce at $1,100. Local agencies typically price higher because of overhead.

Is a website builder cheaper than hiring a developer?

Up front, usually yes. Over time you pay a monthly plan and give up control of structure, speed and SEO. A custom site costs more at the start and suits businesses that depend on search.

Why is a remote studio cheaper than a US agency?

Lower overhead and no large sales layer. The trade-off is a time-zone gap, which is handled with scheduled calls and written scopes. Ask any provider to put scope and handover in writing.

Do I pay sales tax on a website build?

It varies by state, and by whether the seller and service are taxable there. Ask your accountant or the state revenue department. Also set up sales tax correctly if you sell products through the site.

Does my website need to be ADA or WCAG accessible?

US businesses can face accessibility claims, and WCAG is the common reference standard. Accessible design reduces risk and helps all users, but cannot guarantee compliance. Take legal advice if you are unsure.

Are domain and hosting included?

Usually not. Our published prices exclude domain, hosting and third-party licenses, so they should be listed separately in your quote.

Can you work with US time zones?

We work remotely and schedule calls at times that suit you, with day-to-day contact by email and WhatsApp. Agree call times when you request your quote.
